Gustatory: smoky and grassy

Flour Bakery + Cafe has a few locations across Boston and Cambridge. I’ve been to the one on Clarendon St. in Back Bay and have had a great experience every time. The service is exceptional – super friendly and really fast – and the space is bright and airy, boasting lots of baked goods, sandwiches, salads, daily soups, and teas. Although they do not make matcha lattes, mate and rooibos lattes are available (and their only dairy-free milk option is soy.) As for their loose teas, the selection is quite good and includes Assam, early grey, mao feng, jasmine, white peony, and tisanes such as berry, peppermint, and chamomile. This time I went for the genmaicha.

Genmaicha is a Japanese green tea mixed with brown rice. Flour’s genmaicha uses a heartily roasted, smoky brown rice which I found complemented the light, grassy green tea really well. All in all, a perfect hot drink alongside some baked goods and, of course, a good book. Durga Chew-Bose’s Too Much and Not the Mood is wonderful.

(Last time I came here I got a sandwich and salad – delicious too!)
