Gustatory: like a candy cane

This matcha powder comes premixed with peppermint leaves (courtesy of MEM Tea Imports) and is prepared by being steamed directly with milk and sugar. As a result there’s no separation between tea and frothed (almond in my case) milk, and the final product is really smooth and quite foamy throughout. I didn’t find the latte sweet, but I couldn’t taste any matcha either. I also didn’t get as much of a kick out of this green stuff as I’ve gotten from other matcha lattes – a good thing in the late afternoon, though. The peppermint was a bit overpowering for me, even so I must admit it was refreshing too, especially on a hot day like the one we had in Cambridge this past weekend. As the matcha comes with peppermint already blended into it, it’s not possible to get this drink without the mint component. But if you like both matcha and mint (think less subtle tea mint, more mint candy kind of taste), this is the latte for you.
By the way, have you read Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Americanah?
